Our Otorohanga correspondent writes : — "The largest social gathering of Europeans and natives yet held in the King Country was gathered here on New Year's Day, to bid good-bye to Captain and Mrs. Norton, the late teachers of the Native School. When it became known that, owing to the large increase of European children in the district, the Board of Education would taku over the Native School after the Christmas holidays, and that in consequence Captain Norton was to proceed to another school in the North, the residents determined that he should not leave without an expression of their good-will. This took the form of a rconster picnic, preceded by a brilliant display of fireworks on New Year's Eve. The meeting proved a great success. In fcha evening a social meeting was held in the Public Hall, and during: an interval an address was presented to Captain Norton, expressing the regret of the residents, both European and native, at losing him and Mrs. Norton, and bearing witness to the great success and ability of Capt. Norton as a teacher, etc. The proceedings were opened by Captain Thomas in a short speech, after which the address was read and presented by Mr. J. W. Ellis. Rawiri te Hauparoa, one of the principal chiefs of the district, spoke on behalf of the natives, and said the removal was much against the wishes of the -Maoris. Captain Norton briefly replied, thanking all for their expressions of good will. Captain Norton and family leave for Ahipara in about a week's time-"
