Te Aroha was en fete on January 1, on the .- \' : occasion of the annual children's picnic. The fete committee had wisely chosen the Domain as -the place in which to hold the picnic, and . •> v the great success of the affair justified their : J* choice. The weather was all that could be IP V desired, and the settlers came pouring into i the. township during the morning from* all the surrounding districts. There must have •'. been fully 500 adultu and children present * -;„ during the day. A lengthy programme of . , V sports had been prepared by the committee " -"'l appointed for that purpose, into which the young people of both sexes and all ages entered with the greatest enthusiasm. Mr. " T. Mclndoo was the moving spirit in this part of the enjoyment, and he put even more than his usual energy into it. He was ably assisted by Messrs, Strange, Whitten, and several others. Special interest was taken in the _ swimming competition, which took place in the new swimming bath, more than 250 paying to enter the bath-house. Some capital diving and swimming was exhibited. Misses Hot- ..'■.. chin, K. Johnson, and Rowe had charge of the catering department, and their efforts fave entire satisfaction. They were assisted "> y Misses Wild,? Strange, Wright, and .■.; Messrs. Davey, Bossons, Wild, Mclndoe, and others. After tea, Mr. Gavin, the chairman of the Town and Domain Boards, in a very neat and pleasing speech, thanked t all the friends who had so kindly helped to ' make the picnic so enjoyable. He also presented Misses Hotchin, Johnson, and Rowe, who had collected the funds for the picnic, and managed the affair so successfully, with S a beautiful plush handkerchief-box each, 4 ;« which had been subscribed for ou the ground by a few of the pajenta who appreciated the young ladies' efforts. Several members of the ' brass band, amongst them Bandmaster Gordon, were away for the holidays, but the remaining ■ members, assisted by, Messrs. Hunter, Cannell, and Everitt, played a large number of pieces during the day, and added very much to the general enjoyment. '. ~ During the day a cricket match—Morrins • ville v. Te Aroha—took place in Lipsey's pandock. The short notice of the match, and several good hands belonging to the local team being absent, placed the Te Aroha men . at a disadvantage,. and Morrinsyille once more came off victorious. A good deal more practice together is required by our local team, before they can hope to regain their . lost laurels.— (Own Correspondent.] . t Christmas presents.
