DROWNED FROM THE MONOWAI.
A MAN JUMPS OVERBOABD. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION, j Gisborne, Thursday. On arrival of tho Monowai from Auckland it was reported thab ab one o'clock this morning, when off Cape Runaway, a steerage passenger named P. Meehey, booked from Sydney to Napier, was observed to jump overboard. The alarm was promptly given, the ship was stopped, and a boat lowered. After a careful search the boat returned, without finding any trace of the man. His effects consist of a swag covered with oilcloth, which will be handed to the Collector of Customs at Napier.
