THE MANUKAU WESLEYAN QUARTERLY MEETING.
The quarterly meeting of Manukan Wesleyan Circuit was held on Wednesday in the vestry of the Onehunga Church, the Rev. H. Bull presiding. The number of church members for the quarter was 193, and 11 on probation for membership. Income for the quarter, £'83 14s sd: expenditure, £88 14s. Sunday-school scholars, 331; teachers, 46. The question of superintendent minister for next year received considerable attention. The circuit stewards, Messrs. Davies and Smith, nominated the present minister to remain a fourth year. In doing so, they referred to the general prosperity of the circuit, and did not propose to effect any reduction in the stipend now paid. The nomination was supported by Messrs. VVestney, Roberts, Robins, Tucker, Stevenson, Crago, and others. Mr. Foster opposed the nomination, and expressed surprise at the course adopted by the stewards. Mr. Morris felt bound to oppose the nomination on principle, as the new legislation had never been submitted to the quarterly meetings extending the ministerial term. The chairman wished it to be clearly understood that he was not anxious to remain in the circuit, and he had so expressed himself to the stewards •when asked to consent to a nomination, and he would only consent to do so upon a practically unanimous voce. Mr. Davies having replied, tae voting was—for the nomination, 14; against, 9. The circuit stewards then proposed that the appointment of the new minister be left to the Conference. Mr. Foster disapproved of this course. The proposal of the stewards was carried on the voices. It was resolved " That the stipend for the incoming minister be £200." On the nomination of the chairman, Mr. W. S. Bowie was unanimously recommended to the Conference as a candidate for the ministry. Messrs. Westney and Robins were elected substitute stewards for the District Meeting. Letters of sympathy were directed to be sept to Messrs. R. and W. Martin and C. Whitmore, who had experienced bereavement in their homes during the quarter. The members of the meeting were, at the close of the business, entertained to tea in the schoolroom, and on the motion of the stewards a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mrs. Bull and daughters.
