Mb. Frank Chaixis, a gentleman who has been resident in Auckland for some time past, leaves by the Talune to-morrow on a trip to Europe. On account of Mr. Haddon's ill-health, the editorship of the Melbourne Argus has practically fallen upon Mr. Howard Willoujjhby's shoulders. Mr. Wm. Docherty has just returned to Invercargill after an absence of seven months at Dusky Sound. During his stay he discovered an overland route from the Sound to Preservation Inlet, and also made the trip between the two places in an open boat. It is reported that Mr. A. W. Hunt (one of the discoverers of the famous Shotover mine at the Thames goldfields) has been one of the fortunate miners at Coolgardie, also that Mr. Morpeth, brother of Mr. Morpeth, of Queen-street Wharf, has been among the lucky ones. The Earl of Kintore, Governor of South Australia, has (says a contemporary) en tered with spirit into colonial life, travelling in bushman's fashion across the continent from north to south ; and, if rumour be correct, speculating rather successfully in Broken Hill shares.
