NEWMARKET BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Thk ordinary meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council was held last evening, when there were present—His Worship the Mayor (Mr. F. G. Clayton) and Messrs. Whyman, Heron, Edgerley, Stone, Page, and Lumpkin. A letter was received from Mr. Walter Price, asking that his water supply account for horses and cows be remitted, as he had been using rain water in preference to the other. The Council decided that they had no power to remii the amount. The Returning Officer reported the reelection of 7 Messrs. John Lason and John Lumpkin; and as fchrso were required, he asked * the Council's advice on the matter. 1 It was ' stated th&h an advertisement calling for nominations to fill the vacancy had been inserted in th<9 papers. The Inspector of Nuisances reported that there were ' numerous complaints regarding the removal of night soil. The clerk was instructed to inform the contractor that unless be discharged ■ his duties in a proper manner they would have to call for fresh tenders. The bank balances to date were read as follow General account, dr., £281 158 2d ; waterworks account, cr., £121 2s ;6d ; , interest account, cr., £63 18s 3d; water sinking fund account, cr., £40. The consumption of water for the past quarter was stated to have been large, and a leakage had probably occurred. On his own proposition it was agreed that the turncock's engagement should terminate at the end of the present month. In moving that the water account be passed for payment the Mayor said the amount fairly staggered him. They were, said he, going to ruin, and it was unfair to the ratepayers. The proposal for a local water •supply is still in abeyance, but judging from the remarks of one or two members no time will be lost in the matter.
