THAMES BOROUGH ENDOWMENT.

AN APPLICATION FOR AN EXCHANGE REFUSED. [from our own correspondent.] Thames, Thursday. The Thames Borough Council has recently been endeavouring to secure the consent) of the Minister of Lands to exchange the Borough endowment, comprising an area of about 2000 acres on the Waihou River, for land of better quality—the exchange to be partly in land and partly in money. The Hon. John McKensiie, however, has replied to the effect that ha had no doubt the endowment in question could not be considered a valuable one until a considerable expenditure had been incurred in drainage, bub he points out) that the land was chosen by the Borough Council, and to accede to the request would require an Act of Parliament. The request, however, was on<> which would, if granted, form a precedent *'or :>fcher local bodies, who would make similar applications in consequence, and in view of this contingency he states that he cannot see his way to take any steps in the direction urged. m.
