LICENSING PROPOSALS.
VIEW OP THE TRADE. Tux Government's proposals in regard to amending the Licensing Act while receiving veiled approval on the part of teetotallers, are looked upon with something approaching dismay by members of " the Trade," who thought that at least they would have rest for three years. In conversation with a Herald representative, one of Auckland's leading brewers said tbe amendments meant "prohibition" and nothing short. The way in which the questions were put he considered was very unfair, as the electors were only to be asked "yea" or " nay" whether they were in favour of a reduction of licenses. As to the proposal that the day of licensing poll should be the same as that on which the general election was held, he considered that could do nothing but bring in corruption, and that the elections would be fought as though there were nothing else at issue but the liquor question, and that the nationality depended upon that wholly and solely.
