THE PROPOSED TAX ON FOOD.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir," Representations having been made to the Hon. Mr. Ward that large importations of wheat and flour are being made into the colony from Australia, be has indicated that in the interests of New Zealand farmers the duty on these articles will be increased without delay." The above is a copy of a telegram from Wellington, which appeared in your issue of Tuesday. What next? Is not bread the staff of life And yet, under the pretext of assisting the New Zealand farmers, Mr. Ward will increase the duty "on wheat and flour without delay." See to it, ye working men and women, before it is too late; remember, so soon as the duty is levied on these articles, so soon will your loaf of bread be raised, it may only be a halfpenny, but think what that means to a poor man or woman with six or more mouths to fill. Why are we working people so easily duped as to our present so-called Liberal Government? Everything is said to be for the benefit of the working classes, but I will leave them to consider whether the above proposal will benefit them or not. Tax, tax, tax is the order of the day.—l am, etc., A Working Woman. Parnell, August 22.
