THE GOLDFIELDS.
[by TELEGRAPH.—-OWN CORRESPONDENT!] I Thames, Monday. [ Alectrstia.—The Clone? level was extended | a distance of about 30 feet daring the past week, and to-day a solid block upon Dixon's reef was reached, whieh has been ascertained to be intact right up to the Success level above, a height or at least about 90 feet. This block is one of those opened up daring the term Mr. A. Thomas was manager of the mine, and it is anticipated it will prove to be a payable one. Victoria.—A start was made to-day to clean out a crosscut which leads into the No. 1 lode at the No. 4 level of the Saxon shaft, with the object of eventually commencing operations on the lode mentioned. It is a fine looking body of quartz over three feet in thickness, and by driving upon its course eastward a distance of about 50 feet a junction with a leader that two or three tributers are working upon with favourable results is expected to be met with, which it is hoped will have a favourable effect upon the lode.
MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS. Try Fluke (Kuaotunu, August 4).— rise from No. 3 level to No. 2 level has holed through at a depth of 120 feet. This will open up a block of ground for stoping on the north side of the rise 105 feet long by 120 feet deep, and on the south side of the rise we shall hare a block 'of ground 70 feet by 70 feet ready for stoping. The reef varies in size from one to three feet thick. Occasionally the prospects are fairly good near the footwall portion of the lode. -We shall now be at liberty to extend the drive north on the main reef as the ventilation is all that can be desired. . It will be advisable to push on this drive as there is a very great extent of country on the line of reef unprospected, and other runs of gold may be discovered in this part of the mine at any time, and we should nave fully 150 feet of backs from this point to work on. The contractors on the No. 2 lode have driven about 10 feet * There is no change of importance. The lode is still small and the country tight. In the Mariposa section we are stoping on the main reef at No. 2 level. The lode is from three to four feet thick. We are also underhand stoping north and south from the main winze at No. 1 level. I have ten stampers running on this ore. It is looking » little better on the plates, and the tailings are assaying fairly well. The great trouble here is the treating of the slimes in bulk satisfactorily. During the winter the slimes have accumulated considerabfy. I have on hand from the plates up to date 80oz amalgam. Most of the crushing this next week will be from the stope above No. 2 level, where I shall expect an improvement in the quality of the ore. The amalgam on hand is only up to Friday mornWaihi Tailings Plant.—The secretary of the Cassel Gold Extracting Company sends us the following particulars of their Waihi tailings plant clean up for four weeks up to the 30th ultimo Tons treated, 1430; ounces recovered, 1349; value, £1689.. ■
