A number of members of the House of Peers, including the Dukes of Westminster, Argyll, and Aberdare, and a section of the Bishops, also Cardinal Vaughan, have asked the Government to make enquiries with a view of adopting the Gothenburg system of controlling the liquor traffic. Mr. Chamberlain when asked to join the movement replied that he despaired of reforming the liquor trade unless compensation was provided.
