PERSONAL ITEMS.

A large dinner party was given at Government House last night. Mr. W. Sutherland, of Onehunga, left by the To Anau en route to England on a trip. Mr. J. Green, hag been elected chairman of the Otago Education Board. Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Nathan leave for England by the Arcadia, which leaves Sydney on May 14. Mr. W. H. Beetham has been elected president of the Wellington Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Mr. W. F. Downes, Wanganui manager of the Bank of New South Wales, is taking a holiday, and will be absent for some weeks.

Mr. C. Ranson, the manager of the Northern S.S. Company, is at present confined to his room, suffering from an attack 9f pleurisy. Miss Mackeliar, who has filled the office of postmistress and telephonist at Pembroke (Otago) for the last three years, leaves shortly for a better position in the service in Dunedin. The Rev. Dr. Stuart, of Dunedin, is again seriously ill, as, besides suffering from hi» chronic ailment, he is in a weak state resulting from a severe cold which has settled on his lungs. The Rev. J. T. Pinfold, F.G.S., who has been appointed to a Weslcyan Church at Whangarei, was entertained by the members of the Roslyn (Otago) Church on April 16, prior to his departure for the North. His Worship the Mayor (Mr. J. J. Holland) received the following message from the Mayor of Grey mouth :—"May each recurring St. George's Day bring you prosperity." Mr. Holland replied as follows :— " Very many thanks. Heartily reciprocate your kind wishes. Revs. D. McNiicoll (president) and H. Bull (secretary), New Zealand Methodist Conference, together with L. M. Isitb and W. J. Williams (principal Wesley College), and Mr. Thos. Allen, left by the Te Anau last evening, via Sydney, for Adelaide, to attend the sittings of the Australasian Methodist Conference. For the first time since the establishment of the law school at Sydney University, the examiners this year awarded a firstclass in the examination for the degree of li. ft. This high honour was gained by Mr. George E. Flannery. Mr. Flannery, who is only 22 years of age, was a pupil of St. Ignatius College, and from there went to the University. He took during his Course at the University first-class honours in mathematics, securing also the University prize. In 1892 he took bis B.A. degree, and was awarded the Wigram Allen scholarship at the intermediate examination for the degree of LL.B. Yesterday afternoon a marriage took place at All Saints' Church, which elicited ' a good deal of local interest, owing to the bride being a member of the church choir, J and the daughter of an old respected colonist, Mr. John Henderson, painter and decorator, who resides in the Ponsonby district. The occasion was the uniting in the bonds of holy matrimony of Mr. Edwin Hardibg (son of Mr. John Harding, of Mount Vernon, Hawke's Bay), to Miss Emily Henderson, and at the above hour the church was completely filled by persons anxious to witness the interesting ceremony. The service was choral, Mr. Beale presiding at the organ. As the bridal party moved up the aisle (the bride leaning upon the arm of her father) the choir sang the hymn, "The Voice that Breath'd O'er Eden." Canon Calder (incumbent of All Saints') performed the marriage ceremony, the bride being given away by her father. There were four bridesmaids, Mademoiselles Henderson (sister of the bride), Harding (sister of the bridegroom), Westwood, of Remuera, and Miss Brett. The bride, who looked charming, wore a costume of white figured silk, with hat to match, and the bridesmaids wore costumes of salmon pink, trimmed with autumn brown, and hats to match. As the bridal party retired from the church Mr. Baale played Mendelssohn's "Wedding March," and as the happy couple emerged from the sacred edifice, and wended their way to the long line of carriages, they were greeted with showers of rice. " Afternoon tea" was dispensed to the guests (about 80), at the residence of the father of the bride, Curransoreet. Among the guests were His Worshio the Mayor and the Mayoress (Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Holland). Mr. and Mrs. Harding leave to-day for Napier, to spend their honeymoon.
