IMPORTS AND EXPORTS.

The imports for the last quarter ending the 31st of March, amounted to £1,834,180 as against £1,782,971 for the corresponding quarter of 1893, showing an inorease of £51,209. This increase is, however, mainly owing to an importation of specie in the quarter of 1894 to the value of ; £50,000. against £10,000 in the March quarter of 1893. The imports into the principal ports for the year ended March 31 were: Auckland ; ... £1,459,750 Wellington ... ... 1.503,046 Lyttelton ... ... 1,168,938 Dunedin ... ... 1,453,145 The imports into Auckland show a decrease, for the amount in 1892-3 was £1,507,670, and in 1891-2 £1,635,750. This, however, we believe, was accidental, and that the imports for the quarter comprising April, May, and June will show an increase owing to the arrival of ships. The total imports into the North Island for the quarter were £3,310,763, and the total for the South Island £3,160,181. The total exports from the colony for the quarter amounted to £3,984,157, as against £3,636,107 in the corresponding quarter of 1893, being an excess of £348,050. The following are the figures for the principal ports:— Auckland ... £1,225,357 Wellington 1,340,205 Lyttelton ... ... 1,729,915 Dunedin 1,067,644 The total exports from the North Island for the year ending 31st March were £4,073,832, and for the South Island, £4,950,583. The total exports from the colony for the year were £9,332,340, as against £9,217,596 for 1892-3.
