ATHLETIC SPORTS.

" CRICKET."' The concluding matches of the season in connection with the 'Auckland Cricket Association were commenced iu the Domain Cricket Ground; ■, on Saturday afternoon,, in the presence of ah uuusually large number of spectators, all of whom, appeared to take the keenest";interest, in the proceedings. " The ladies were well represented. The weather was almost all that could be desired, and the ground was in excellent condition. ' GORDON V. PAKNELIh '', .'"*, The great centre of interest was. naturally the final contest for the senior cup between the Parnell and" Gordon . Clubs. , ~Messrs. MaeCormick and Hemery, acted as umpires in a manner which gave every satisfaction ._ Ine Parnell men were the first to go to the wickets, but their display proved a great disappointment to their supporters, -being all disposed of for 33., Mills and Young were the first to go to the wickets, faciug the bowling of Kelly and Kallender who bowled throughout the innings with splendid results, Kelly securing five wickets for 18 runs, and Kallender four for 13 With the score at four' Mills was neatlv bowled "Kelly, "' after making one drive' for 3. Nicholson joined Young, and they brought the score up to 13, when Young also succumbed to the bowling of Kelly who was quite unplayable. King was the next to represent ' Parnell at ; the wickets, but he only saw three runs added to the total before Kcily removed Nicholson's bails. With the score still at 16 Lawson was disposed of, and after two had been added Gardiner retired. Then a great panic set, in, Rowe and Holle each failing to score, and Stone only made two before he was disposed of. j The innings thus closed for 33, King being the only man to reach double figures, carrying his bat for 13. This score is the smallest forgone innings in senior, cricket this season, the next beiug the score of 34 put up by United also against Gordon. '-.■ '■':■ ''':' .'••.';->:■.",:':."'•-..'-■ ..••...• ,» At a quarter-past four the Gordon went to the wickets, Williamson 7 and Ansenne facing the bowling of Mills and Rowe. After two maidens Williamson started the scoring by getting Mills away -for a single. With the score at 5 Williamson was beautifully caught and bowled by Mills, the catch being a clever left-handed'-one. Kallender filled the vacancy and.; runs came.very slowly, only 10 being scored in 1 the, first forty minutes.. Soou after this Kallender with a two and some singles brought his own score into double figures, and another couple brought 20 on to the board. Lusk and Lawson were put on to bowl, Ansenne getting the former nicely away for three. '■'•..With the score at 29 Lawson dismissed Ansenne with a -.slow. , Williams filled the vacant place, aud Kallender colmed his new. mate by driving Lusk to the on for three., which Williams followed up with a hit for two. This topped the Parnell : score r with / only two wickets down/ With the score at 40 Kallender was caught by Rowe, after playing a splendifl innings for 25. Gould took Kallender's" place,. but | before any further 'scoring took place Williams lifted Lusk hard to leg, where he was nicely caught by Rowe. m Ball ouly arrived in time to see Gould bowled by Lusk, the 'last three wickets having .fallen for 40. " Fowke (the captain), filled the vacancy, got Lusk well away for a two, but 'a few balls afterward he was neatly caught by Holle. The score 7 was 'now at 45. Hemery took Fowke's place, and started off with a two,' but was soon afterwards given outlbw. With the .Gordon, score at 49 for the loss of 7 wickets, stumps were drawn,and the match will be continued next Saturday. The following are the scores :-rj _ , '■>•-'. Paknell.—First innings. ' ;

Although/ only scratch matches • were played, they proved most enjoyable and exciting, both for. the onlookers and those who took part in the play. The' afternoon tea, which was provided by Misses Kilgour and Wilkins, was very ''.much appreciated. A group, of the players was photographed by Mr. Stack, of Pitt-street. : A-meeting. of the members of the club will be held this evening, at the office of the Auckland Racing Club, and play will be indulged in at Potter's Paddock, on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. /,' ';■ ' BOWLING. \\r- ,'•* l ' ~ AUCKLAND BOWLING CLUB. . .'>, On Saturday the home members of the club welcomed back the representatives. who had attended the Easter Tournament at Napier. There was a large attendance of \ members and visitors, including ladies. Refreshments on a liberal scale were provided," Mrs. Holland, the Mayoress, presiding over afternoon tea, which was much enjoyed, and a very agreeable afternoon was spent. The play was confined to the.usual Saturday matches, so as to embrace all the bowlers present. .At the conclusion of the games the ex-president, Mr. Thomson, who apologised for the absence of Mr. Lawson, the vice-president, in a neat speech welcomed the representatives, especially the winning champion rink, skipped by M r. Gorrie, of which the other members were Messrs. D. Ross, J. Meuuie, and J. Paterson, and said that by ; their success they had raised Auckland to the proud position' of nolding the Championship of North Island, and the thanks of this club, specially were due to these gentlemen., He called for three cheers tor Mr. Gorrie, which was heartily responded to, and a similar compliment was paid successively to Messrs.; Ross, Menniei and Paterson. In acknowledging the compliment on behalf of himself and the other members' of his rink, Mr. Gorrie said that though proud of their success, no one was more astonished than themselves, because they . had entered as a third rink without entertaining any other idea that that they would be cut out in the first or at best in the second round. '.Mr. Thomson referred specially to himself, but he could assure them that no one of the rink excelled the other, but all played consistently well throughout. ".: Mr. Gorrie acknowledged the excellent arrangements made by the Napier Club, and the hospitality shown to all the visitors, and also their indebtedness to the Northern Bowling Association, and especially their secretary, Mr. Lambert, whose arduous duties were performed to the admiration of all. ' The Association had decided that these tournaments should be held bi-annually in future, the next to be in Auckland at Easter, 18116. It would be necessary, therefore, to pur. their ground in thorough order in anticipation of that event. Three cheers were then given for the President, Mr. Hardie, and the other representatives, and duly acknowledged, Mr. Hardie remarking that nothing could excel the kindness of the Napier Club and people, and for whom three hearty cheers were given, thus bringing the pleasunt afternoon's gathering to . a close.
