Granting of Special Claims.—A public meeting,' under the; auspices of the Miners' Union, will: be held in the Academy of Music on Thursday evening next, for the purpose of protesting against the granting; of special claims on the.Thames Goldfields. It is generally understood , that this step has been taken .in : consequence"of an \ application "* lodged at the Warden's office by the \ Jlay Queen old Mining Company for the granting of a special claim license to cover the three licensed'holdings "now held by the jjompany, and known -as the Saxon, May ftueen, and Trenton holdings.; The hearing of this application comes on at the Warden's Court on the 19th:.inst.,i! The idea is also to object to the granting of any special claims, in future as well. " '.« ;/ : May Queen.—The * quartz v coming m. to hand from the May Queen section, both in the lasb stope that is 1 being taken along upon No. 5 reef in the floor of No. 2 level in the stope upon the same reef westward of Moore's -winze is of fair quality, colours of gold being seen at every breaking down, \ ■ a few pounds of picked stone have also been secured during the week. Colours of gold .are also seen in the quartz coming from the winze .that; is being , sunk; upon Clarkin's leader, below No. 1 level, in; the Saxon sec-. tion. There is every indication of a highly remunerative block of ground being opened up at the latter point very shortly.
