THE GOLDFIELDS.

[BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Friday. May Queen. —The contractors for the extension of No. 6 level, to open up a new level in the May Queen section, are making very fair progress. They have driven about 35 feet since they commenced their contract about ten days ago. Hazelbank.—Operations in this mine during the past week have not resulted in very much improvement. The stopes upon Darby's leader are yielding quartz, in which a little gold is seen, but very little picked stone is being obtained, without which the quartz is only of moderate grade. The driving on the new hangingwall leader is being continued at No. 1 level, bub no gold has been seen during the last few days, although the quartz looks very promising, and the leader appears to be making stronger as the drive advances upon it." St. Hippo.—A crushing of 24 loads of quartz broken from the reef in the rise above the low level of the Atlas was completed this morning for the very fair return of 230 a 18dwt melted gold. As the rise mentioned is now connected with the upper level Mr. Crawford has started to open out on the reef at both ends of the rise at a point about 30 feet below the top level, where the reef is about two feet in thickness and looks very promising. The only other work in progress at the present juncture is the extension of the low level upon the same reef. At this point the reef has been pinched down to about si* inches in thickness for the last 10 feet of driving, but ib appears to be opening out again in the present face. A fine class of sandstone country prevails on the footwall side of the reef, whilst that on the hangingwall side is improving as the drive advances.
