Captain Steele reports leaving Saraarai (British New Guinea) on the 4th instant, and having fine weather until the 11th instant, when in latitude 170 degrees, and to westward of the Hilion Reef, a rotary gale was encountered. The vessel was run to the northward, aud then hove-to for 20 hours. Much water was shipped, but no damage done. A Japanese exchange describes the failure of a Chinese shipping company. The Chinese company had long been talked of, but did not commence active operations until last autumn. It owned only one little steamer,, whereas its Japanese competitors had six boats; but the Chinese steamer, which coat 120,000 dollars, could have taken all the little Japanese craft into its hold without much difficulty. Probably it was because of the imposing dimensions of the steamer that it was expected to monopolise the trade of the river, but in point of fact its size proved its ruin, for in the first place it required a large crew, and in the second it drew too much water when filled with cargo to navigate the river conveniently. The prospects of the company were excellent at the outset. In addition to a subsidy of 5000 dollars yearly from China, it had also a contract with the Korean Government for the transport of 100,000 bales of rice from Chemulpo to Soul. Despite these advantages, a loss of 5000 dollars was made on the working of the steamer for half a year, the result being that the company was ienominiously wound up, and the steamer sold for J&),oooyen. Henceforth she is to have a Japanese crew, and will carry tribute rice ou the Chinese coast.
