FIGHTING AT THE NEW HEBRIDES.
REPORTED MURDEti OF A WHITE
SETTLER. The Rockton, on her round trip to the islands, called at Aneityum, the southern port in the New Hebrides, and there met the steamer Croydon, fresh from a round trip to all the islands of the group. At Tanna the natives were killing one another off as fast as opportunity offered. The Tanna men have been at war, bush against coast, for months, bub since the warships left the islands, on account of the hurricane season, head-hunting has increased. Unfortunately it is believed that Mr. Carter, a white settler on Tanna, had met his death at the hands of the savages. The report reached the Croydon from native sources, and requires confirmation. Several years have elapsed since Mr. Carter first settled on Tanna. He made friends everywhere amongst the natives, and seemed to have no fear of them whether they were at war or nob. It is stated that Mr. Carter was formerly an officer in the British army, and is well connected in England.
