A young man who recently arrived in Waimate (Canterbury) from the North Island, and who since his arrival has been considered of unsound mind, on the morning of Sunday, March 4, proceeded to the Roman Catholic church, and with an axe demolished two images standing on either side of the altar rails, and - which were obtained in France, and presented to the church by the Rev. Father Goutenoire. Having completed his work of destruction he quietly left the church and returned to the main street, where he told several persons what he had done. He was arrested on an information laid by the i Catholic authorities, and will be examined: aa to his state of mind.
