INQUESTS.
An inquest into the cause of death of an eight-year-old boy named Louis Black was held on Saturday forenoon at the Rob Roy Hotel, Freeman's Bay, before Dr. Philson, coroner. The circumstances of the unfortunate accident have already been narrated, the facts being that two brothers were bathing in Freeman's Bay, and one of them getting beyond his depth was drowned. Sergeant Carlyon, of Ponsonby, represented the police, and after evidence had been taken the jury returned a verdict to the effect "that deceased was accidentally drowned, and that no blame was attributable to anyone." .'; In regard to the accident in one of the Three Kings gravel pits, which resulted in the death of Charles Stuarb Couelly, a young man, son of a farmer residing in the neighbourhood, a coroner's inquest was held at his father's residence at three o'clock on Saturday afternoon before Dr. Philson, coroner, and a jury, of whom Mr. Thomas Billington was foreman. Trooper Reidy represented the police. Evidence was given by Herbert Conelly, brother of the deceased, who stated that on going to the gravel pit at a quarter-past nine o'clock on Friday morning he found his brother partially buried under a mass of newly-fallen scoria, with only his chest and face visible. He ran for help, and Mr. George Kinloch and others came to his assistance. They extricated the body, in which there did nob appear to be then any signs of life, and Dr. Roberton, who arrived shortly afterwards, pronounced life extinct. After hearing the evidence, the jury returned a ' verdict of *' Accidental death."
