ATHLETIC SPORTS.
CRICKET. , The cricketers were favoured with beautiful weather for their matches on Saturday, arid the Domain ground throughout the afternoon presented an animated appearance. The senior matches attracted considerable attention, and some good cricket was displayed. AUCKLAND I. V. UNITED. I. „ ; , This match was ■ commenced on Saturday, but contrary to expectations, both sides were dismissed for very small ; scores. This was attributed to the disgraceful" state of the wicket, which was one that even our country cricketers would be ashamed of. Auckland were the first to bat, but so well did Hawkins and Steinson bowl that seven of . their best bats were dismissed for 35, of which Wilson made 10. The last three wickets, however, did much better, and the innings realised 80.' Lundon was the top scorer, with 33 to his credit. He hit hard on the offside, and alto- § ether played a good innings. Hawkins and Stemson bowled unchanged, getting five wickets each at a small cost Yates and Stemson started for United, but the latter was caught by Hatton off R. Weill's first ball. Hawkins was next, and immediately started scoring by hitting Neill for two fours and a single, while Yates got a three; in all, 12 runs offNeill's first over. In his second over Hawkins, in attempting a big hit, was stumped by Richards. C. Hay was bowled first ball, while D. Hay was caught, also first ball, by T. Neill in the long field. R. Weill thus accomplished the " hat trick." None of the others made any stand, and the innings closed for 43. Yates carried his bat through the innings for a really well-played 17. it will be seen by the analysis that R. Neill did another good performance with the ball. I Ddnkdin, Saturday.— first of the competitors for the Athletic Championship Meeting next Saturday to put in appearance are Roberts and Creamer, of Auckland, who arrived on Saturday. . Wellington, Saturday. — McCormick, who was selected as the Wellington representative in the weight-putting events at the Championship Athletic Meeting in Dunedin will be unable to attend owing to an injury to bis wrist." LAWN TENNIS. At the Eden and Epsom lawn on Saturday afternoon two of the Association Championship matches were played off. A. Peel, who was in splendid form, bad an easy victory over P. D. Scherff, who was completely over- | matched. Peel won all three sets, the scores being 6—l, 6—2, 6—l. Peel meets Gillies in the next round, and a very close match is anticipated. The second match was between J. Hall and A. Goldie. The first set was won by Hall fairly easily, the score being 6—2. The next two sets were also won by Hall, but the games were much closer, both sets being 7— Hall played almost everything on the volley, Goldie getting back a good many very awkward ones from the back line, and some very nice i rallies took place between the players when in this position. During the early part of the afternoon all five courts were occupied, with matches, a good many of the Club Handicaps being played off. The system of, scoring by points instead of games and sets has taken a firm hold, but 120 points for a match ' has been found to be rather too long, especially if a large number of points are owed as well as given in the handicap. At the Parnell lawn a very interesting match took place between A. Tempest and J. P. Stevenson, which resulted in a win for the latter. The first set was a love .one for Stevenson, but the second set fell to Tempest, who won it 6—3. The third and fourth sets, however, were annexed by Stevenson, who thus won the match by three sets to one, the scores being 6—o, 3—6, 6—2, 6—4. Stevenson, it will oe remembered, played Hooper in the final for the Championship last year. All the courts on the lawn were kept well filled with players till it got too dark to play." ' '- The first round of the Gentlemen's Championship matches is now played, and the second round has to be played off by the 17th insfe. Paton plays Eliott, Peel plays Gillies, Hall plays Stevenson, and Cooke plays Harrison. The days when these events will come off will be announced when fixed. With regard to the ladies' championship matches. a slight alteration has been made from those announced in our Saturday's issue. Miss Nicholson plays Miss Bull, and Mrs. Chapman plays Miss Home on Friday afternoon at Parnell, instead of on Thursday Miss E. Laishley playing Mitis Rookes on Thursday at Parnell, and Miss Mowbray playing Miss M. Frost at Mount Eden. « As the Inter-Club Doubles * are to commence before the conclusion of the 'Championship Singles this year, the various clubs should be preparing I their entries ■<§ for these events. A,meeting of the Association delegates will be held next week to settle various, .matters in connection with these matches, the, first rounds of which will be commenced op the 3rd of March. Although there are rumours \ot some of the clubs not competing in. these events, it is to be hoped that all the associated clubs will have full entries, as the average strength of a club is shown in no better way than in these contests, requiring tas they do 12 players from each club to fully represent it.
