[BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Wednesday. Nose of the Railway Commissioners are entitled to pensions, bub only to compensation. Mr. Maxwell states that ho did nob apply for compensation before the determination of the Cabinet was arrived at. • lie was offered but refused compensation on Saturday before he was actually aware he was not to be retained. He and Mr. Hannay received letters stating that their services would not be required, late on Saturday. Mr. Maxwell then applied for and obtained compensation. The Commissioners' engagement terminated yesterday, not on the 27th, as is generally supposed. They had, therefore, only 48 hours' notice. The Times urges that Mr. Hannay be appointed general manager of traffic.
