THE OTAMATEA COUNTY COUNCIL AND CONTRACTORS.
TO THE EDITOR
Sir,— the Weekly News of December 23, "A Paparoa Correspondent " complains about having to make two applications to the Otamatea County Council for payment of a contract which he carried out. It is quite true that " A Correspondent" made the two applications for his money; but, as no fullysigaed cheques are kept in stock in the County • office, the delay arose in having to send the cheque to Matakohe to be signed by the County chairman, which necessitated a week's delay. " A Correspondent," being an old bush hand, shouldn't growl over a week or ten days', delay in receiving payment for work done on a road after the certificate has been handed to the treasurer; as lam very sure he has often had to wait much longer for his money when working in the bush, and probably, without a murmur. No dissatisfaction has hitherto been expressed on account of delay in paying for works, as the Otamatea County Council makes a point of paying all accounts at the earliest possible period. Perhaps there was some serious reason, known only to himself, why "A Correspondent" was so anxious to get his money, and, if so, his impatience was excusable.—l am, etc., James Hemphill, January 4,1894. County Glerk,
