THAMES DRAINAGE WARD.

ANNUAL MEETING. - The annual meeting of the Thames Drainage Board was held yesterday, > Mr. Kiss-, ling-presided, and there were present :— Messrs. A. Porter, W. S. Wilson, Comer, Spratt, Paltridge, and Dickey. , \

THE MANAGER S; REPORT.

, The manager's report was' laid before the meeting, as follows:— ' tjy . .. .^,.. ;*. ; Thames Drainage Works, December 30th, 1893. f To the Secretary and Thames

Drainage Board.

Gentlemen,— have the honour to inform you that pumping operations during the post [twelve months have been carried on continuously, the usual stoppages excepted. Pumping was resumed on January Ist, and by the 6th the water was down to the 400teet level,, at which depth ■ it:was retained until I received instructions from yon to reduce the water a further depth of 30 feet to drain the May Queen, and on October 11th to further reduce the water to the 500-feet level. Repairs : A new drop-clack had to be obtained to replace the old one that was injured at the time the bucket-rod broke in 1892. This was lowered to its place on March 13th. The pin and bearings of the balance-bob, being very much worn, new ones were obtained from Messrs A. and G. Prioe, and placed in position whilst the pumps were stopped for the annual boiler inspection in May last. During this stoppage, the piston was alßooverhauled, andmewßprings put in where required. The pumps having been again stopped during the past week for the annual cleaning-out of the County waterrace, advantage has been taken of the stoppage to take out a length of the bucket-rod and replace it with a new one. All the machinery has been overhauled, and one of the boilers .cleaned out, in addition to two cleaned out in September last. The dropclack has also been drawn, the valves changed, and other necessary repairs effected to place the same in thorough working order. The chimney-stack of the winding engine having become pretty shaky, I had scaffolding erected, and the bricks in the stack repointed from top to bottom. This cost a little more than what I estimated, as it was found after the scaffolding was erected that the stack was in a worse condition than anticipated. The coal consumed during the past year has been principally Kamo, with an admixture of Newcastle. I estimate the quantity of coal required for the ensuing twelve months, if pumping is continued from the 500 feet level, to be about 3000 tons. The machinery and pumps are in good order, and working well. Pumping was resumed at five o'clock this afternoon.— am, etc., W. H. Phillips.

The balance-sheet for the year ending 3lsb December, 1893, was presented as follows: \

£137 8 0 The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the balance-sheet, said the Board hod been able to carry on its work more cheaply in consequence of using Kamo coal. He was very sorry the supply nad been cub down, but ho was clad to say the Hikurangi Company had made arrangements to"start in aboub two months. He understood Hikurangi coal was equal to Kamo for the Board's requirements, and it would be probably the coal which would be used by them in the future. With regard to the pump they all knew it was an antiquated machine, one very expensive to work. He (the Chairman) felfa that unless something was done very shorbly to relieve the pressure, a difficulty would be found in getting the contributions met; that was, unless some fresh discovery was made. Under these circumstances, of course, the best thing that could be done would be to provide a new pump. He did nob think, in the presenb humour of Auckland people in regard to mining, they could bo expected to find the money. The only thing he thought was for the Government to take the matter in hand, and become cognisant of the value of mining at the Thames to the whole colony. He thought the Government would be justified in action of this kind, and in going down to the deeper levels. • In conclusion, the Chairman spoke in high terms of the work done by the officials. Mr. Comer seconded the adoption of the balance-sheet.

The motion was unanimously agreed to. ,! : • .. VOTES OP THANKS. '; Mr. Gombr proposed a vote of thanks to the chairman for so successfully carrying through the duties of the year. The Board he (the speaker) thought had done very well indeed. Mr. Spbatt seconded the vote of thanks, which was unanimously agreed to. The Chairman, in responding, said the Board had during the year worked moss harmoniously, and ne had always found the members of the Board ready to assist him in everything. There had nob been the slightest complaint from any of the companies. He wen moved a cordial vote of thanks to Mr.' Mac Don noil (secretary), the manager ab the Thames, and Mr. Wood* ward, the late returning officer ab the Thames. This was unanimously agreed to, and the proceedings closed. /
