THE LONDON POOR.

APPEAL BY THE LOKD MAYOR. Press Association.—Electric Ttilegraph.—Copyright. London, January 3. The Lord Mayor appeals for additional! funds for the London charities and to provide relief for the unemployed. THE CHESS CONGRESS. »• ■ — [by telegraph.—press association.] Wellington, Wednesday. At the Dunedin Chess Congress on Saturday, Brown opened with Buy Lopez against Cleland. A splendidly contested 'and highly interesting game followed, until Cleland made a slip, and moving his K to K3 instead of to R sq, this blander gave Brown mate in two or three moves, and compelled his opponent to resign. Mellor had the move against Smith, and opened with'the Evans' gambit, which was accepted. Mellor at once asserted his superiority. Smith worked hard to stay the attack which he had allowed his opponent to make, but without avail, and was ultimately compelled to resign. Hookham had the move against Lelievre, and the latter adopted a novel variation of the Sicilian defence. An instructive and very interestin? game ensued, which resulted in neither side gaining an advantage, a draw being eventually mutually agreed upon. Barnes had the move against Pleasants, and was for the third time subjected to the Sicilian defence. At move 11, Barnes sacrificed a pawn for the attack, which became so strong that Pleasants had great difficulty in defending his position, and about the •15th move lost two pawns, exposing his king very much. Later on, at move 24, lleasants thought it advisable to give Ida queen and a pawn for two rooks. This, however, did nob stay the attack, and falling into a little trap at his 27th move, he immediately resigned. Edwards was pitted against Mouatt. The former played Zukertort'a opening, and Mouatt at his 6th move played P to QKt 3, which looked all right at the time, but proved weak as the game proceeded. On the 11th move white started a series of forced exchanges, and obtained a strong attack, during which Mr. Mouatt lost his queen for a rook. Ab the 44th move black resigned. Barton had a bye. . , The following are the results of Monday's play :--Barton, playing against Hookham, opened with the guioco piano, but made a premature attack, and resigned on the 18th move. Mouatt opened with Evans' gambit against Brown, which the latter declined. By an oversight Mouatt lost a knight, but he recovered himself, and had practically won when another blunder lost him the game. Lolievre, adopting the English opening againsb Smith, began his attack early, he won a knight on the I'ith move, a bishop on the 18th and the match on the 22nd move. Cleland offered Evans' gambit, which Barnes declined. The latter won a pawn at the 11th move. A long and interesting game followed, but at the 36th Barnes played weakly, and had to resign ab the 39th move. Edwards played Zukertorb's Opening against Pleasants. Edwards could have forced a win ab the 24th move, bub he made a slip and eventually a draw was forced. Mellor had a bye. [The resultsof Tuesday'splay have already been published.] ,:.... *' Donkdin, Wednesday. In the Chess Congress to-day Cleland and Pleasants played a drawn game. Pleasants opened with the Buy Lopez, Cleland adopting the Berlin defence. The draw was on the 34th more. Brown drew with Borton at the 44th move,' play on both sides being short of Congress form. Edwards adopted the Sicilian defence againsb Mellor, and ab the 23rd move won his queen for a rook. Mellor resigned at the 46th move. Smith played the four knights opening against Mouatt. Smith made a weak move and lost a piece, bub played a careful defence, resigning at the 58th move. Barnes defeated Hookham after a game lasting over six hours, and one of the best so far seen. Barnes adopted the Ruy Lopez and conducted the attack on the Steinitz plan. He had an almost irresistible attack At the 12th move, which Hookham skilfully neutralised ab the 46th move. Hookham proposed a . draw, bub Barnes declined, having a knight and five pawns againsb Hookham's bishop and five pawns. Barnes' won after six hours thirty-live minutes play. Brown is still leading with Cleland second (after taking his bye), and Hookham third. -
