AUCKLAND CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.

. ♦ i - ANNUAL SPORTS. The annual sports of the Auckland Caledonian Society were held in the Domain Cricket Ground on Monday, and notwithstanding the large number of counter attractions, and. the threatening state of the weather in the forenoon, there was a good attendance of about 3000 people on the ground. The programme was an exceptionally lengthy one, comprising no fewer than forty events, but although many of these, especially the dancing contests, took up a considerable length of time, the whole programme wits got through in reasonable time, a fact which speaks well for the management of the stewards and officers, and especial credit is due to tha secretary. The judges for Highland events were Messrs. T. Scott, John Mair, and R. Stevenson for running, the Hon. W. Jennings and Robertson; for tossing the caber, etc.,, Messrs. P. Smith, G. B. Martin, and James Stewart. The stewards were Messrs. R, T. Michaels (chief).G. Johnstone, J. Ewan, A. Anderson, and W. C. Fraser. Mr. Malcolm acted as recorder, Mr. James ' Johnston as starter, and Mr. P. Quinlan , haudicappcir. The fact that post entries were ' taken for many of the events added considerably to the duties of the Secretary (Mr. D. Robertson) and handicapper, but most of the . events were got off well to time. As might be expected the Highland sports were tho main features of the day's programme, and the skirl, of the bagpipes coald be heard all day long, greatly Bo the enjoyment, no doubt, of . those who appreciate this peculiar class ; of music, hut in addition to this Mr. ' West's Nev'ton Band played musical ' selection in the shade of the trees to the right of the pavilion, and also contributed the music for the sailors' hornpipe contests. Sergeant Barnard and a couple of constables willingly rendered good assistance in keeping back the crowd from the enclosure, but ! otherwise their services were not required.
