FRIENDLY SOCIETIES.

The usual quarterly meeting of Coarb Nil Desperandum, A.0.F., took place on the 19th December. The election of the officers for the ensuing six months rrsulted as follows:—C.R., Brother M. Copeland; S.C.R., Brother J. McDermott; S.W., Brother H. T. Garratb, Jan.; J.W., Brother H. Menzies; 5.8., Brother A. Brookes; J. 8., Brother D. K. Eliotb; Assistantsecretary, Brother Thomas Phillips; Auditor, S. J. Lee; delegates to the district meeting, Brothers S. J. Lee and E. Nordsn. Dr. King was elected medical attendant.

The Pioneer National Order of Oddfellows met on Dec. 18 ab the Cook-sbreeb Hall. The following officers were elected —N.G., Brother Nox; V.G., Brother Kelly; elective secretary, Brother Cuthberb ; secretary, Brother Thome; auditors, Brothers Meade and Home; treasurer, Brother Bryan; delegates, Brothers Gorman, Home, Moore, and McDowell. For the position of surgeon a number of ballots were taken, with the result that Dr. Moir was finally elected.

The quarterly meeting of Juvenile Courb Zealandia's Pride took place on Thursday, the 14th December. The following officers were elected for the ensuing six months :— C.R., Brother I.Feldman ; S.C.R., Brother K. Garratt; S.W., Brother Goldsmith; J.W., Brother Nelson; 5.8., Brother Rowe ; J. 8., Brother Smerdon ; Assistant Secretary, Brother G. Boulton.

A meeting of Court City of Auckland, No. 3975, A.0.F., took place on Dec. 18. The following officers were elected for the ensuing six months.: —C.R., Brother James Spencer ; S.C.R., Brother J. J. Jenkins S.W., Brother Constable; J.W., Brother Smerdon; 5.8., Brother Pelham; J. 8., Brother Millbank ; secretary, Brother James Robinson ; treasurer, Brother E. Augur : assistant secretary, Brother James Smith; surgeons, Brothers Drs. King, Moir, and Darby.

The thirteenth annual meeting of the Industrial and Provident Permanent Building Land and Investment Society of Auckland was held on December 1. Mr. T. Peacock occupied the chair. The Board of Management, in presenting their thirteenth annual report, stated that they had continued to exercise great care in the selection of securities, and consequently the operations of the society had been of a sound character. After deducting all charges, the shareholders had been credited with interest at the rate of six per cent, per annum, and the reserve fund increased. The balance-sheeb showed the receipts for the year to be £22,726 13s 7d, including £1366 10s 9d, balance in hand an 1 in bank on the 30th September, 1892. On the expenditure side there was bank deposit £950, and cash in bank and in hand £570 14s 7d. The following gentlemen were elected to the positions named :—Mr. H. G. Wade, to be president; Mr. Henry Bretti, to be vicepresident; Mr. C. B. Stone, to be treasurer; Messrs. E. Bartley, James Dacre, R. E. Finch, J. J. Holland, A. Kidd, C. La Roche, P. H. Mason, and D. B. McDonald to be directors; Messrs. J. J. Ker and George Fraser to be auditors.

A meeting of the Women's Franchise League took placo on the lab December, at the Y.M.C.A. Rooms. Mrs. Daldy (president) presided. There were 25 ladies present, lb was decided to dissolve the association, as the object for which ib had been formed had been achieved. The treasurer (Mrs. Caradus) reported that all liabilities had been discharged, and there was a balance in hand of £4. Ib was resolved to present £2 15s to the ST.M.C.A. Ib was then unanimously agreed to form a new Women's Political League. The adjourned meeting of the recentlyformed Old Boys' Association of the Auckland Grammar School took place on December 5 at the Grammar School buildings. There was a good attendance. Dr. Roberton presided. The draft rules were adopted after some discussion, after which the election of officers took place. President, Dr. Koberton; vice-presidents, Mr. E. W. Burton and Dr. King; secretary, Mr. B. Meyers ; treasurer, Mr. E. E. Vaile : committee, Messrs. J. Parr, Battley, Busby, and Taylor. The Southland Frozen Meat Company held an extraordinary meeting on December 6, at which the directors' proposals to increase the capital to £100,000 were adopted. Ib was announced that the New Zealand Shipping Company and Turnbull, Martin and Co. (Shire liners) would take 4000 five pound shares, and that as a consequence the vessels of both companies would make the Bluff a port of call. The shipping companies will have the right to elect two of the six directors. The directors had been negotiating with Nelson Brothers for amalgamating the business in South land, bub this will be unnecessary if the' shareholders confirm the resolutions passed to-day. Strong comments were made on the apathy of sheep farmers, who would not take stock in the company bub got the benefit of the high prices ruling through competition, which their laxness threatened to convert into a monopoly with a consequent reduction in the value of sheep. The annual meeting of theOamaru Woollen Factory Company was held on Dec. 11. After writing off £2494 6s 3d, and putting aside £350 for a new warehouse and office, a credit balance of £2323 16s 8s is left. Out of this a dividend of 8 per conb. to preferential shareholders, and of 4 per cent, to ordinary shareholders, is to be paid, leaving £1415 16s 8d to be carried forward. The retiring directors were re-elected. Ab the annual meeting of the Walton Park Coal Co., Dunedin, the directors' report stated that in the face of keen competition, the company had been able to hold its own, There was a credib balance of £1441 18s, which the directors recommend should be i carried forward. The meeting resolved to ' write down the capital by one-half (£6006), 1 and write off a corresponding aura from the I general plant) account.

Ab a meeting ab Dunedin on Monday nighb, December 18, called to form a Social Reform Association, about 60 persona attended. The conmittee, which had been previously appointed, reported that, after sifting evidence, hearing witnesses, and having written communications laid before them, they, without endorsing or controverting the figures and proportions, are convinced that the statements made by the Revs. Gibbs and Saunders are, in the main, justified, and thab the necessity for special efforts for social purification is established. It was decided to form a Social Reform Association, and a committee of 15 was appointed. In the constitution of the Social Reform Association the objects set forth are _:—-(1) To secure the enforcement of the existing laws, relating to gambling and the sale of liquor; (2) to promote social parity; (3) to secure the services of the besti citizens for public life and (4) to promote social legislation whenever deemed desirable. The annual meeting of the shareholders in the Waiuku and Onehunga Steam Navigation Company (Limited), was held in the company's office, Waiuku, on December 19, Mr. John Scott, chairman of directors, presiding. The reporb and balance-sheet) were read. The report showed that during the year £2097 had been received as against) £2057 in the previous year. A dividend of 3s per share was declared. The accounts showed the company had assets in the bank amounting to £900. Messrs. C. Hosking and Thomas Middleton were elected directors, and Mr. J. J. Deed was appointed auditor.
