The Chess Congress opened at Dunedin on Tuesday, when Cleland beat Mouatt; Borton bout Mellon ; Lelicore beab Edwards ; Brown beab Barnes ; Pleasants heat Smith Hookham received a bye. The Chess Congress was continned on Wednesday, with the following results :— Mellon v. Cleland : Mellor played AUgaier Kiesaritzki's gambit, and Cleland adopted Paulson's defence. Cloland won a piece at the ISth move, and a dozen moves lator his opponent resigned. Borton v. Mouatt : Borton opened Allgaier gambit, which was accepted. About the 21st move Mouatt was in difficulties, and being called away he exceeded his time, the game going to his opponent by forfeit. Brown v. Lelivro: The (>uioco Piano opening was adopted by Lelivre. Ninetyone moves were made in the three hours before lunch, and on resuming it was agreed . to draw. Edwards v. Barnes Edwards played the Sicilian defence. A very even game followed till aboub half-past three, when Edwards announced mate in two mores. Hookham v. Pleasants: Hookham adopted the Kuy Lopez opening, and Pleasants replied wifcn the Berlin defence. At the lath move Pleasants lost a piece, and another followed at the 25th move, when Pleasants resigned. Smith had a bye. Later. The Chess Congress was continued to-day, with the following results :— Cleland v. Borton : Cleland had the attack, and played Pto K4. Borton adopted the Sicilian defence, and a most exciting game resulted. Borton obtained tho advantage of a pawn, and kept it until near the close, when a slip lost him his advantage, and a draw resulted. Mellon v. Mouatt: Mouatt opened with the Scotch gambit. At the 12th move he was tho victim of an unfortunate oversight, by which he lost a pawn, and in the next move, by another slip, he lost his queen, and resigned. Edwards v. Brown : Edwards adopted the Zukertort opening, and after vigorous play on both sides, Edwards won a piece on the 24th move, and the exchange on the '27th move ; and queened a pawn in the 32nd move, when Brown resigned. Barnes v. Lelivro: Barnes played the French defence. The game was pretty oven to the 24th move, when Barnes instituted a very strong combination, and was enabled \ to effect mate on the 33rd move. Hookham v. Smith; Smith opotiod with the Scotch gambit, and the game was oven till the 32nd move, when, having a dra.v in hand. Smith played a weak move, and resigned shortly afterwards. Pieasants had a bye.
