MAYORAL INSTALLATIONS.

NEWTON BOROUGH.

A special meeting of the Newton Borough Council was held last evening, for the purpose of installing Mr. T. English as Mayor of the Borough. There was a full attendance of members, Mr. S3. C. Brown, the retiring Mayor, presiding. Mr. Brown, in takiug leave of the Council, said he wished to express bis feelings of regret at the severance of their connection. He had been in the Council tor six years, and during that time he had never had an unpleasant night at any of their meetings. He often read the reports of other meetings of similar bodies, and he observed that they were often characterised by a great amount of wrangling and disorder. He was pleased to say that nothing of the kind had ever occurred at the Newton Borough meetings. The Council were to be congratulated upon the completion of the Great Worth Road. Their books showed thab the sum of £1048 7s 3d had been expended upon this work. He wished to point oub that the contributions from the Archhill Board and other sources lessened the amount chargeable to the Surrey Ward to £616 18s 2d. Referring to the drainage works of the borough, he thought they would be justified in raising a small loan to carry out thab important work. He bad great pleasure in introducing to them Mr. English in his new capacity of Mayor of the borough, and he hoped that the same kindness and forbearance would be shown to Mr. English as had been extended to him.

Mr. English then mads the usual declaration. He thanked the members for tho honour that they had conferred upon him, He said he had great pleasure in moving si hearty vote of thanks to the retiring Mayor,, He thought they could congratulate themselves upon the state that the borough funds were left in at the expiration of Mr, Brown's term of office. He referred to th« great amount of work that had been accomplished during the past three years. Mr. Warnock seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. Mr. Brown thanked them all for -the kindly way in which they had spoken.
