Publications- , CHRISTMAS NUMBER OF THE (Ldlceldg gieins. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 16,1893 The general and unrivalled excellence of the SPECIAL CHRISTMAS NUMBER issued in connection with the Auckland WEEKLY News is now everywhere recognised and appreciated. This is manifested by the highly eulogistic references made to it in various parts of the world, and also by its ever-expanding circulation, which year by year has been increasing "by leaps and bounds." In anticipation that the forthcoming number will meet with cordial public acceptance by reason of its fIATIOMAL, ARID VARIED FEATURE^, The Proprietors have resolved to issue a First Edition several thousands in excess of that of the previous year. There will be i 00 —SIXTY PAGES —OO Printed on Superior Paper, enclosed in a Handsome Coloured Cover. And a portion of the contents will be found enumerated below The sumptuous Presentation Plate is this year entitled AKEf AKE! AKE! REWI DEFYING THE BRITISH TROOPS AT ORAKAU. The Fighting Chief of the Ngatimaniapoto is depicted, in life-like form, refusing the terras of surrender offered through Major Mair. This incident in the Waikato War was the last gallant stand made by the Maoris. In the foreground Itewi's muscular figure, standing upon the parapet of the Pa, is drawn with the. characteristic energy attached to the work usually produced by the artist, J\£li. KENNETT W/ITKINS, And accurately conveys the stubborn courage of that redoubtable chief. He is supported by several male and female wairiors, armed with Enfield rifles and double-barrelled fowling pieces; whilst in the rifle-pit in the centre of the picture amongst oilier Maoris is he who shot at and nearly killed Major Mair. At the sap and breach ill the palisade stands Major Mair, while near him is an Armstrong gun, which has been pushed through an opening by gunners. In the distance are cavalry, and the l'.ntisb bivouac at the edge of a kahikatea swamp, with Mount i'iiongia on the. horizon. This historical picture, beautifully reproduced in monochrome at our Works, will be an attractive addition to the decoration of any room, and will familiarise our children, far more than a mere verbal description, with the dangers incurred only a few years back by their fathers and grandfathers in securing them the heritage of this fair land of New Zealand. * To advertisers this furnishes a grand opportunity for bringing their wares under the notice o thousands of readers who would not otherwise be reached. And to strongly impress the fact upon * the memory, many hands will be found here pointedly indicating that THE N.y*A %y/ AUCKLAND \^ «*/ WEEKLY HEWS \# a®-/ G|il\lSipiis |lu|flDE4 IjBP SiF WILL be published IJISB \ ON / A SATURDAY, DECEMBER 16,1893. /"^ V& \ ■■'■ *>' / W* J\ Price - - 6d. / Jjffi $ — _—-— ft OUR SPECIAL PRIZE COMPETITION.
