AUCKLAND FRUITGROWERS' UNION.
A first meeting of the committee appointed by the conference of fruitgrowers held recently in the National Association Room, Queen-street, was held yesterday at Messrs. W. J. Hurst and Co.'s store, Queen-street, Mr. G. B. Hutton, president of the union, occupying the chair. The first thing taken into consideration was the adoption of standard cases, and it was proposed to apply to the timber companies asking them to make bushel cases, 18£ in by 12in by lOin for pippin fruits; a half-bushel case, 18£ in by Bjin by 9iu for common peaches, apricots, nectarines, also for tomatoes, - plums, and gooseberries. The size for grapes, cherries, and special peaches was not decided on, its consideration being deferred till next meeting. The timber companies will be asked to brand the bushel and half-bushel cases, " A.l''.U.," as a guarantee of the quantity contained in the cases, and a hope was expressed that the public would accept those cases as a standard, and dispense with the very mixed classes and sizes of cases now in use. It was agreed that the minutes of the conference meeting should be printed and distributed amongst the affiliated fruitgrowers' associations. The appointment of a secretary was deferred till funds were received. It was clearly pointed out that the object of the re-union was to obtain a commercial benefit for fruitgrowers generally out of the union. It was agreed that for the present the headquarters of the committee should be at Messrs. Hurst and Co.'s stores, Queen-street.
