A SHOCKING ACCIDENT.
— A shocking accident occurred, yesterday afternoon, at Mr. J. J. Craig's wood yard, Custom-street West, to a married man named John McLean, in his employ. McLean was cutting firewood with the circular saw, when the belt slipped off the shaft. He stopped the engine and tried to replace the belt, the flywheel still being in motion. The belt caught his left hand and drew it round the shaft. He put out his right hand to save himself, when it was also caught in the belt, and the belt then slipped off, freeing him from further danger, bub not till his right arm was fractured, and his left hand had been almost torn from the wrist. On the police being informed, Sergeant Macky went to the aid of the injured man, and took him to Mr. Aickin's pharmacy, where Dr. Mackellar attended to his injuries, and ordered his removal to the Hospital, where the injured hand was amputated. The poor fellow bore his sufferings with great fortitude. _____________
