The attention of the Council has been directed to rumoured infringements of this Act, and it is necessary that stops should be taken to check the followii): abuses:— 1. Several persons have registered, each under several assumed names, which they intend to personate at different polling booths. -.'. Names appear on the Rolls whose owners never applied for enrolment. Thus some person or pertons must be guilty of making a false declaration. 3. Names appear on the Rolls of some persons who are under 21 years of age : of 'some who have not been three months in the colony ; and of others who have not been naturalised. To check these abuses, a voluntary Vigilance Committee will be allotted to the various polling districts, and known cases of personation, or other corrupt- practices, will be duly reported for prosecution. PENALTIES. Imprisonment, not exceeding two years, with or without hard labour ; and the Returning Officer ba? power to arrest without a warrant.
