OUR NEGLECTED INDUSTRIES.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir.ln my visit to the Agricultural Show at Hamilton a few days ago,! was very much pleased to come across a couple of very important industries. The first was wine of a superior quality, made by Mr. Le Quesne from fruit grown in the Waikato. As the industry is capable of being largely extended, I trust the people of the district will devote more of their attention to the cultivation of the fruit necessary for its production. 'Tis said that "good wine needs no bush." I am sure if this could be brought into consumption it would please the. palate much better than the imported article, and find employment for the industrious settlers, besides adding to the wealth of the colony. The second was cider of good quality that had been manufactured a few miles from Hamilton. The evaporation of apples having been proved a success, could not a company be formed to combine these two industries and prevent this valuable fruit from being given to the cows and pigs. Surely there are a sufficient number of wealthy poople in the place to take an interest and put such an industry upon its legs. The last steamer from San Francisco brought to our shores over 500 cases of fruit. What a commentary upon the interest and enterprise of our people ! I notice not one of our would-be legislators refers to this subject. They fail to understand what contributes to the building up of a great nation. The industries of Great Britain are being quietly sapped by the Continental nations, hence the acuteness of the labour difficulties at present in England.— am, etc., Andrew Bell. Wyndhanvstreet, November 17,1893.
