THE HOME RULE BILL.
NOT TO BE BROUGHT IN NEXT . . , i; SESSION. '; ;- ~ /■* • - SPEECH BY LORD SALISBURY* Press Association.-El«ctric Telejrrapb.-Copyttort. London, October 18., The Home Secretary, addressing a meeting at Glasgow, announced that there was no chance of the Home Utile .-, Bill being reintroduced next session, which would be devoted entirely to British legislation. ' ! In the course of an address at Preston, the Matquis of Salisbury stated that if the Home Rule Bill did not reappear at the autumn session, it would be considered that Mr. Gladstone had abandoned the measure. Denomina- * tional education, he said, was becoming one' of the burning questions of the day. He contended that the House ol Lords was infinitely stronger than Mr.Gladstone, supported as it was by the country. Owing to the Government's refusal to dissolve they must abandon Home Rule, which, he argued, was equivalent to a pistol presented at the mouths of the Clyde and Mersey, and would make it necessary to keep an incessant watch on the Coast. Lord R. Churchill contends that Mr. Gladstone is now in a dilemma; as, if he postpones Home Rule in favour of English measures, he is certain to lose his majority.
