The first annual literary competition in connection with St. John's Boys' Club took place in the schoolroom on Tuesday night. The president (Mr. W. Bartley) occupied the chair. The following are the results of the competition :— Recitations : Mr. H. Butler, Ist; Mr. L. Beaumont, 2. Readings: Mr. G. Horsley, Ist; Mr. G. Currie, 2nd ; Mr. J. Hall, 3rd. Extempore speaking : Mr. P. Harris, Ist; Mr. P. Moir, 2nd; Mr. B. Scott and Mr. C. Green tied for third place. A spelling bee took place during the evening, and was won by Mr. B. Firth. The Rev. C. H. Laws and Messrs. P. R. Dix and A. J. Blomfield officiated as judges. The competition will be continued next week, when solo singing and instrumental music will form a leading feature. The second People'? Popular Concert at Onehunga takes place next Friday, Mr. E. J. Gatland and Mr. John Fuller will join forces "Love and War."
