THE V.A.T.C. MEETING.

DEFEAT OP THE DERBY IAVOURITE. Press Association.—Eloctric Telegraph.—Copyright.

, Melbourne, October 18. The V.A.T.C. Meeting, which was postponed from Saturday last, began to-day. Though the weather was rather cloudy and threatening about noon it turned out a beautiful clay, and there was an excellent attendance, including His Excellency the Governor Lord Hopetouu and suite.

Speculation was very brisk. The running in the Caultield Guineas completely upset Pulvil's chance for the Derby, whilst enhancing that' of the Sailor Prince.

The following are the results :— The Oaulmkld Stakes of 400sova: the owner of the second horse to receive 50so.vs and the owner of the third 20sovs from the stake For three-year-olds and upwards. Weisht-for-age. One mile and a furlong. With penalties attached.

Crozier's b g Vakeel, 4yrs, Bst 111b (Bowes) ..< 3 The other starters were : Portsea (9at 41b), Linburn (9st4lb). Malvolio (9st 4lb), Swordbearer (9st Sib, including Clb penalty) Fortunatus (9st 4lb), Sternchaser (9st 4lb), Ascob Vale (9st 4lb), Jeweller (9st) t Camoola (lOst, including 141b penalty), Division (Bst 111b), Fulham (9st lib), Quality (Bst 131b). Betting : 6 to 4 against Brockleigh, 5 to 1 Fortunatus, Bto 1 Vakeel, 20 to 1 the others. A Rood start was effected, Brockleigh getting away about sixth, but he was knocked completely baok after the first furlong when attempting to join the leaders, and his case looked apparently hopeless, at the back of the coarse, where Vakeel and Port Admiral were dividing the lead. Entering the straight Brocklek'h made a tremendous run, and at the half distance he was on level terms with Port Admiral, and forging ahead, won by a length, two lengths dividing second and third; Portsea, Division, Jeweller, and Camoola following in a bunch. Time, lm. 59gs.

Tub Handicap Hurdle Rack of 250sovs. The owner of the second horse to receive 50sovs from the stake. About two miles. Whitefoot, lOst 71b (Barbour) 1 Leonardo, 9st (Ferguson) 2 Neli, 10st4lb (Williams) ... 3 Fifteen horses started. Betting: 2 to 1 against Whitefoot, 5 to 1 Leonardo. These were the only two in it. A great race between the pair ended in a half-length victory for Whitefoot, with Neli twenty lengths away. Time, 3m. 45£s.

A middling start was effected, Delaware getting away with the lead, though he was quickly passed by Pulvil and Aquarius. At the six furlongs post The Sailor Prince was tenth, and Patron absolutely last; but approaching the straight the latter came up very fast, and looked an easy winner halfway up the straight. Here The Sailor Prince came at him like a bulldog, but failed to quite set up, and a terrific finish ended in his defeat by a neck. Pounamu, a length and a half away, was third; then came Pulvil, Delaware, and Aquarius in the order named. Pounamu ran a wonderfully good colt considering his comparative greenness. Time, 4615. Gordon, the trainer, and the rider of Patron, complains of being twice interfered with dttriug the race.
