BAY OF ISLANDS COUNTY COUNCIL.

A MEETING of this Council took place in the Public Library, Kawakawa, on Monday last. There were present:—Messrs. J. C. Ward (acting chairmen in the absence of the Hon. Henry Williams, M.L.C., at Wellington), Hall, Dick»son, Anderson, Horace Williams, and J. MeAlister, also the clerk, Mr. R. Reed. CoKREsrosDK^'CB.—A pile of correspondence was laid on the table, from which I select a few of the most important ones, as many were of irrelevant matter, and of 110 public interest. A letter was read from Mr, John Williams, of I'akaraka, acknowledging acceptance of his resignation as clerk and treasurer to the Council, and thanking the Council for their courtesy and kind consideration of his services. From J. R. Triphook, relative to drains in Tironga Gorge. From the Crown Lauds Commissioner, stating that by the direction of the .Surveyor-General, the attention of the Council is called to the outlay of thirds pavable to them, as to the particulars, etc. From the General Government, enclosing a draft of the Noxious Weeds Bill. From Mr. R. M. Houston, M.H.R., acknowledging the receipt of a petition to be laid before Parliament. From the Agricultural Department, in relation to Arbor Day, 1893. From the Deeds Registry Office, relative to sections m the Whangae district. From the chief surveyor with £75 as progress payment out of the £250 of the grant. From the North Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, enclosing £3S 3s as payment, also stating that t!»i isvy of Id in the £ be levied on the Bay of island rates for the year ending the 31st March, 1894, payable on the 21st June, 589;}, and to say that the sum £6116s 10s being the arnouu'; due by the Bay of Islands County, may be placed to the credit of the Board, the total rateable value of the county being, exclusive of • Crown and native lands, £177,994. From Mr. Brisbane, Whangaruru, relative to the expenditure of the £3 allowed by the Council for a bridle track to Helena Bay. From the Land Tax Department, Wellington, forwarding Treasury vouchers for the payment of £198 12s lid. as full subsidy due under the Local Bodies Finance and Powers Act, 1885. From Treasury, Wellington, 21s, Goldfield revenue to June, 1893. From the Chief Surveyor, Auckland, that £19 6s 7d were available for the footbridge on the Ngapihito Road as a subsidy towards the same. From Constable Haslett, reporting that he had sold during the last month "32 dog collars, amounting to £8, which I forward herewith." From Mr. Hansard, Kaikohe, relative to the vehicle tax. There were over seventy letters read on matters of little interest to the Council.

Resolutions Agreed to. —The following resolutions were disposed ofMr. Horace Williams proposed, seconded by Mr. McAlister, " That the clerk be authorised to call for tenders for the new shed on the Russell wharf, according to the plans and specifications." Proposed by Mr. Horace Williams, and seconded by Mr. McAlister, " That the clerk be authorised to write to Mr. Lambert, lluketenui, that if the applicants are willing to meet the expenses of the closing of the old road, and the dedication of the new one, that the piece of land required may be leased to them in the hands of trustees for a public hall." Proposed by Mr. Press, seconded by Mr. Anderson, " That the application of W. H. Allan for a slaughter license be granted after notice in the local paper." Proposed by Mr. Horace Williams, seconded by Mr. McAlister, "That the sum of £15 be voted for metalling the new work on the Matawhiri Road." Proposed by Mr. Anderson, seconded by Mr. Press, " That two chains of metalling be done opposite Harrison's new store, Okaihau." Proposed by Mr. Hall, seconded by Mr. Anderson, "That the sum of £30 be located for repairs on the Kawakawa-Derrick Road." Proposed by Mr. Hall, seconded by Mr. McAlister, That Mr. Triphook be instructed to make plans and specifications for the same under the supervision of Messrs. Hall and Ward, and to have the power, to open and accept of tenders for the same." Proposed by Mr. Hall, seconded by Mr. Anderson, " That fresh tenders be called for the bridge at Waiotekaru according to the specifications supplied by Mr. Triphook.' Proposed by Mr. McAlister, seconded by Mr. Pickeson," That the following returning officers be appointed to the next county elections Kuwakawa Riding, Mr. J. D. Kirkpatrick; Russell Riding, Mr. J. B. Williams; Pakaraka Riding, Mr. W. E. Golfe; Waimate Riding, Mr. W. S. Kin"." Proposed by Mr. Press, seconded by Mr. Hall, "That this Council urgently desire to impress upon the Government that the resources available are altogether insufficient for the requirements of the county, and asking that provision be made' to supply the need." Accounts. —The accounts laid on the table were passed, amounting to £508 19s 2d. The chairman stated that there was over £500 of bills to be expended by the Council, and that when they were paid there would not bo more than £100 available for works, etc., and that therefore the grants asked for must be reduced.
