NEWTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Newton Borough Council was held last night. There were present: Messrs. S. C. Brown (Mayor), VVebley, Holdcn, English, Warnock, Porter, Davenport, Shackelford, and Donald. Mr. Davenport, the newly-elected member, and Messrs. Shackelford and Donald, who were re-elected at the recent election, made the usual declaration before taking their seats. Water Consumption.—The Town Clerk reported that the consumption of water for the fortnight ending September 18 was 228,000 gallons 39,000 gallons more than for the previous fortnight. He considered that the extra quantity must have been wasted. He found the water running away in one household, and on remonstrating with the lady in charge she replied that it could not matter when there was so much rain falling every day. There were others who seemed to have the same idea, and who did not understand that every gallon of water run off in the borough had to be paid for. It was decided to have the meter taken out for the purpose of having it tested.

Accounts.Accounts to the amount of £77 0s 8d were passed for payment. Archiiill Road Board . — The Mayor drew attention to the fact that the Archhill Road Board was indebted to the Council by a sum of between £140 and £180. This was too much to be allowed to run on. He thought that a peremptory demand for payment should be made upon the Board. It was decided to give effect to this suggestion, the account to be submitted to the Finance Committee before being forwarded to the Board.

Old Mill Road.—Mr. Warnock drew attention to the bad state of the Old Mill Road. The matter was referred to the Streets Committee for a report. Gorse.—lt was decided to notify the pro-perty-owners of the borough to clear the gorse from the streets in front of their allot ments.

Cox's Creek. The Council resolved that the attention of the City Council be called to the dangerous state of the Richmond Road bridge over Cox's Creek, and that they be requested to put the same in repair.
