HERALD V. STAR.
As unusually interesting and well-contested football match between teams representing the New Zealand Herald and the Star took place at Potter's Paddock on Saturday afternoon. The contest was witnessed by a considerable number of spectators. Mr. T. O'Connor acted as referee in a manner satisfactory to all parties. The Herald kicked off and Kirkham returned into touch. From the line out the Herald worked the ball down the field, and some scrums ensued on their opponent's line. The Star here made a fine rally, and by a useful passing run managed to get out of danger for a time. Another threatening Herald rush was well stopped by Drummond, who kicked into touch. Blewden made a good run, and gained a considerable amount of ground, but the Star were back again in the Herald 25 in a very few minutes, and a strong dribbling rush compelled the Herald team to force. Shortly after this the Star got a mark, but the attempt at goal proved unsuccessful. The play continued very even for a time, but eventually Blewden eluded his opponents and scored the first try for the Herald. The attempt to convert the same proved a failure. Herald 2, Star 0. The second was at times very interesting, Haslam, Mackie, and Blewden doing good work for the Herald, whilst Scott, McIntyre, Brooks, and Drummond were equally prominent for the Star. Towards the end of the game the Star men made several fine attacks, but their opponents managed to avert any further scoring. The Herald thus won by 2 points to 0.

In the match Southland v. Otago, which followed, Otago won by 9 points to 4. The visitors had the luck to win the toss, and played with the wind. In the first spell they succeeded in scoring two tries, neither of which was converted, but they were pressed on several occasions. The wind nearly died away in the second spell. J. Torrance scored two tries, and Martin one for Otago, the latter being converted. Otago had a free kick for interference under the posts, but having no place-kick nothing came of it. Cuff played a fine game at the back for the visitors, and Hurst did good service. Mcßobie was the best of the forwards.
