OFFICERS V. EX-OFFICERS. A very interesting rifle competition took place on Saturday afternoon, at the Mount Edon rifle range, between garrison volunteer officers on active duty and ex-officers who have retired from the service. The challenge was issued by the latter, in order to encourage good feeling rather than with any strong hopes of winning, but they did propose that tho match should be fired with Martini-Henry rifles instead of Snidere, as the active officers had practice with the latter weapon, while many of the ex-officers had nob handled one for years, and if. was though*) the contest would be more even if both fired with strange weapons. However, they gave way to the wishes of the officers, and consented to fire with the Sniders. The match was conducted in a spirit of the greatest friendliness, and resulted in a victory for the ex-officers by 55 points. The ranges were 200, 400, and 500 yards, five shots at each range. It is expected that a return match will be fired with Martini-Henry rifles. The following are the scores:—
