TRENCHANT WINS THE DERBY. Press Association.— Telegraph.— Copyright. Sydney, September 16. Glorious weather was experienced for the opening day of the A. J.C. Spring Meeting. There was a good attendance, which included their Excellencies the Governors of New South Wales and Victoria and their suites. The following were the results of the various races :—-
Hurdie Race, 200sovs added. About two miles and a-half.
Barzan, 9st 31b ... 1 Whitefoot, lOst ... ••> 2 Hilma, 191b , ••• 3 Fourteen horses started. Fog and Barzan led tor a mile, when the latter drew out and won easily. Time, sm. Is.
Trial Stakes of 200sovs. One mile and a-
quarter. Mr. I. Earnshaw's b h Jeweller, 4yrs, by Splendor—Souvenir 1 Mr. G. G. Stead's b f Ich Dien, 3yra ... 2 Dickens -3 Eleven horses started. Jeweller won easily. Time, 2m. 13s. Ihk A. J.C. Derby, a sweepstakes of 30sovs each, with 500sovs added. For three-year-olds : Colts, Bst 101b ; fillies, Bst 51b ; geldings at time of starting allowed 31b. The owner of the second horse to receive lOOsovs from the prize, and the owner of the third to save his stake. One mile and a-half.

Clark's b or br c Projectile, by Chester—Percussion - Betting: 6 to 4 against Projectile, 3to 1 Delaware, 4to 1 Solanum, 5 to 1 others. A good start was effected, but the pace was slow for half the journey. Pharamond showed the way to the shed, but as the pace warmed up bs gave place to Solanum. with Trenchant and Delaware handy. When they turned for home Trenchant put in a determined challenge, and fighting every inch of the run home wore down Solanum, and won by half-a-lcngth. Time, 2m. 545.
Epsom Handicap of lOOOsovs added. One mile. Mr. C. Parker's b h Brockleigh, 4yrs, by Goldsbrough—Ethel, Bst 101b (Cough)... 1 Mr. J. Abrahams' br h Little Bernie, 6yrs, Bst 61b (Williams) 2 Mr. G. D. Wood's bo Lullaby, 3yrs, Cab 101b (McCarthy) 3 Twenty-four horse started. Betting : 6 to 1 against Brockleigh, Shamrock, and Sainfoin, 14 to 1 the others. The field were well together until entering the straight, when Brockleigh put in Ids claim and was followed immediately by Little Bernie. The former, however, had all the best of the fight, and won somewhat easily at the finish. The victory was a very popular one. Time, lm. 40is.
The Spring Stakes of 400sovs; weight for age. One mile and a-half.

Nine horses started. Betting: 7 to 4 against Catnoola, 0 to 4 Cremorne, 10 to 1 Loyalty. A splendid race between the placed horses, but nearing homo the two New Zoalandcrs drew away from tho field, and Mr. O'Brien's colt lasting the longest, eventually won rather easily from the C.J.C. Derby winner. Time, 2m 38Js.
Kensington Handicap of 200sovs. One mile. Mr. J. Allsopp's br h Antaius, aged, by Sir Modred—Millie, 9st 21b 1 Merry Belle, 7*b 21 2 Aurelius, Sst Gib ... 3 Twenty-four horses started. Autanis won by a length. Time, lm43s. The defeat of Projectile, and the victory of Trenchant in the A. J.C. Derby on Saturday last, may be expected to bring about a great alteration in connection with the V.R.C. blue riband. Previous to his victory on Saturday last Trenchant had only started on three occasions as a two-year-old, when he ran unplaced ; bub his initial effort at three years old was something better, for in the Spring Handicap run at Sydney Tattersall's meeting on the 3rd instant lie finished second to Cannon. Trenchant, who was trained by J. Alsopp, is engaged in the V.R.C. Derby, and also in the Melbourne Cup with 6st 101b.
