Last year New Zealand Ghost Stories were given a place in the Christmas Number of the Auckland Weekly News, and the unique collection proved a novel and interesting feature. This year the editor hopes to be able to provide his wide circle of readers with an equally new and attractive dish in the shape of a selection of original tales of personal adventures in New Zealand. If, as Lord Beaconsfield once wrote, ** adventures are to the adventurous," then New Zealand should be teeming with them, for the colony was first settled by the adventurous, and they are still to be found in every city and village, on every goldfield, in many a Maori pa and lonely bushwhare; clearing the primeval forest in the interior. r- oloushiug the stormy waters of our rugged coast. What thrilling stories, for instance, can be told ; by those still living in the colony of personal adventures , IN THE MAORI WAR IN EARLY SETTLEMENT ' ,- . ■ : IN MISSIONARY WORK IN EXPLORATION ... , IN TRAVELLING ON FOOT IN RIDING AND COACHING IN YACHTING AND BOATING IN GOLDMINING IN MOUNTAINEERING IN FORDING CREEKS AND RIVERS IN BEING LOST IN THE BUSH IN TREE-FALLING AND CATTLE-DROVING IN ROAD AND RAILWAY-MAKING IN GUMDIGGING AND COALMINING IN STATION LIFE IN SURVEYING IN FIRE AND FLOOD, in short, in a thousand ways characteristic of the opening up for settlement of a young country like our own. In order to secure contributions from as largo and varied a number of competitors as possible, the Proprietors of the Auckland Weekly News have decided to offer Ten Guineas in Prizes, divided as follows : — FIRST PRIZE .. .. .. £5 5 O SECOND PRIZE £3 3 O THIRD PRIZE .. .. .. £22 O These Prizes will be awarded to the three narratives of personal adventure in New Zealand which, in the opinion of the adjudicator, possess the greatest interest because of the novelty or sensational character of the incidents described. We desire to make it clearly understood that this is not a mere literary competition. There are hundreds of gumdiggers, coal-miners, settlers, fishermen, shepherds, bushmen, and others—who may be able like Othello to speak " Of most disastrous chances, Of moving accidents by flood and field, Of hair-breadth 'scapes," but who may not be able to clothe the narrative of their wonderful and thrilling experiences with a single literary grace or charm of style, whose grammar, indeed, may be all at fault, and whose spelling may be far from perfect. In judging the various contributions sent in their literary merit will therefore occupy a subordinate place. The only conditions we impose upon competitors are that their contributions must be authentic, and must not have appeared in print before ; that they must be written on one side of the paper only, and must not exceed '2000 words in length. Every contribution must be signed with the name and address of the writer, which in the case of the three prizetakers will be made public, while we reserve to ourselves the right to publish any of the contributions received. Contributions should be sent addressed to the Editor Auckland Weekly News, and marked on the outside, "Competition," not later than October 16, 1893. Saddlery and Harness.
