ACCIDENT AT OPOTIKI.
: An accident, which fortunately tamed out' | less serious than at first promised, happened lately to Mr. Cahill. He was crossing Huntress Creek with a springcart, soon after a heavy,fresh, when the- horse got into soft ground, and, taking fright, commenced plunging, the tide being three-quarters flood. ; James Given, a youth, who was with Mr. Cahill, swam ashore to seek help. The * horse had only her head above water. Mr. Cahill's endeavours to free the mare from the trap were frustrated by her rearing and falling on the trap, breaking the shaft and throwing Mr. Cahill into the creek, who then made for the shore. Mr. W. McCarthy appeared on the spot, and, hob seeing Mr. Cahill, thought he wan drowned, and swam out to the trap, where, not find- - ■ ing f anyone, he tried to hold the .mare's head above water. , Mr. Cahill, seeing this >■% was inosb dangerous, shouted to him ito - / return, = but he , refused -to leave the horse :■'-..% till the timely arrival of Mr. Malcolm, and . his telegraph •- maintenance party. They '--.' took in the situation at a glance, ran out a length •of itelegraphiwire to .the trap, and making- it fast, clapped on their ."handy billey, and hauled the whole affair ashore * • in" safety.
