Writing to a Scottish paper, Mr. Brace, secretary of the Shetland Pony Stud-book, stated a fact which shows' that a new line of usefulness is being opened up for the hardy little Shetlander?. " The other day," says Mr. Bruce, "I called at a leading hotel in the country where there is a large horse-hiring business carried on, and on asking to see a pair of Shetland ponies which the proprietor of the hotel had purchased some time previously, the owner replied : * Oh ! Mr. Bruce, I am sorry you will not see the ponies to-day ; they are out on the job.' ' Shetland ponies on the job,' I replied. ' Yes,' he replied; ' nothing has ever paid me better. We have yearly a good few summer visitors in these quarters, and I was nearly eaten up by the ladies and children for the ponies last year, orders being always booked in advance, as the children were very unwilling to allow them to be sent back.'" Other hirers may find it equally profitable to keep Shetland ponies for this use, and a great demand may yet spring up for Shetland ponies for this use." A very simple test by which to distinguish butter from margarine is to draw three or four pieces of ordinary sewing cotton slightly twisted together through the piece to be tested, set light to it, and blow it out almost immediately, and smell the smoke. If it is margarine it will have the peculiar smell of a newly extinguished tallow candle, but with butter there is no such smell.
