UNITED CRICKET CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING.

The annual meeting of the Auckland United Cricket Club was held at the British Hotel last night. Mr. C. S. McKinney presided. There was a good attendance of members.

The annual report of the secretary, as follows, was read and adopted.

I think I can fairly congratulate members on the club's operations last season. We tied with Gordon CO. for first place in the Senior Championship, but wore defeated in the playoff, after a good contest. Our record for these matches was six won and throe lost. Beside* these, two matches were played with Manukau County, both of which were won hv the club. We were severely handicapped in our later matches by the absence of D. Miller, our best bowler last season, and N. I.iisk, our wicketkeeper, both of whom left Auckland shortly after Christmas. Club members and Auckland cricketers generally were deeply shocked at the sudden death, during the season, of Mr. .T. Mnmfonl, who had captained the club for some 20 years prior to his retirement, in 1891. Mr. Mtunford died actually on the field of play, being engaged in batting at the time, and no cricketer could wish for a better end, when his times does come, than to die " in harness." The batting a vet ages are an improvement on the previous season, The veteran Yates holds the top average with - 10. S. McPhersnn's consistent batting was one of the features of last season's cricket, and his aggregate is considerably the highest in the club, while his average is 20*!), a very tint! performance for his first year as senior. Stemson showed much improved form, and more than doubled his previous year's average. Carlton limy, another of our colts, shows the capital average of 15*75. MacCormick did letter than he has done for some years, and U. Harvie and I). Hay were also of great service. The bowling figures are remarkably good. J). Miller effected a wonderful improvement in his trundling, ami was consistently successful. He conies out top with 24 wickets, average 7"'J7. It. Alul'hersou only took part in three matches, and how well he did may be gathered from the fact that he took 21 wickets, average 7"47. Hawkins also bowled with great effect, taKing the greatest number of wickets, 24, with an average of 8*7(1. Owing to illness during part of the season Stemson was not quite so successful as in the previous year, but nevertheless his average of 10*3.) for 20 wickets is a capital one. I). Hay, 13 wickets, average UNO, did very well indeed for his first season, and will no doubt do oven better in the coming one. I have never, since I joined the club, seen the bowling figures so uniformly good. Mr. taker's prize for batting, confined to those players who had never won one of his prizes, lias been won by 8. McPherson, and Mr. Mnmford prize for all-round plav, under the like conditions, has been awarded to Douglas Hay. It is with the greatest pleasure that 1 report the success of our young players, and I hope that we shall get more like them in the future.

Several new members were elected

The following officers were elected for the ensuing year :—President, Mr. A. K. WhitaIter; vice-presidents, Messrs. H. Rees George, C. S. McKinney, G. Court, and Captain Lambert; committee, Messrs. Stemson, Yates, C. Harvie, S. McPherson, and Gunthorp ; delegates to Association, Messrs. MacCormick and Stemson; captain, Mr. MacCortnick.

Votes of thanks were tendered to the scorer and the officers for the past season, and to Mr. A. E. Whitaker and Mrs. Mumford for the prizes given by them, which had been presented to Messrs. 1). Hay and S. McPherson.

It was resolved, " That the regret felt by the. Club members at the untimely death of Mr. Mumford be placed on record in the minutes, a letter of condolence having been sent to Mrs. Mumford at the time of her husband's death."

A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings.
