The Union S.S. Company's steamer Upolu left for Tonga and Samoa at eight o'clock last night, with several passengers, and the usual general cargo. When off Rangitoto Reef the . main steam pipe gave out, and the steamer had to return to port. She will leave again this afternoon. The Northern S.S. Company's steamer Argyle arrived from the Great Barrier last evening. She leaves for Kuaotunu, Mercury Bay, and Tairua this evening. Yesterday afternoon the Northern S.S. Company's steamer Chelmsford left on her usual monthly trip to the North. She returns on Sunday, and leaves for Whangamata and Whakatane on Monday. At noon to-day the Union S.S. Company's steamer Manapouri leaves for Southern ports, Hobart, and Melbourne. The brigantine Defiance will sail for the Kaipara to-day to load timber for Sydney. In a letter from Captain Shaube, of the "> American barque Essex, which arrived at "Wellington on Saturday last from New York, he states that the passage occupied 124 days. The Snares was made in 114 days, and owing to light northerly winds and fine weather it took ten days to reach Wellington. The passage throughout was uneventful. On completion of discharge the vessel comes on to this port with part cargo. The brigantine Rachel Cohen has sailed from Hobart for a South Australian port. Last night the Northern S.S. Company's . steamer Douglas arrived from Whangarei, with a cargo of coal. The Union S.S. Company's steamer Rotokino is due from Newcastle to-day. _ The s.s. Port Chalmers, of the Milbarn line, was laid up for several months in London, and in the interim her owners expended £10,000 in thoroughly adapting her to the requirements of the Australian trade, and fitting her with a complete suite of refrigera*- - nR ?^}* anceß ' capable of effectively preservesWOO tons of meat. The present voyage to Melbourne is the record passage of the fleet. The trip from London to Adelaide was covered in 41 days, an average speed of la knots being maintained on a moderate daily consumption of coal. The ship made rapid progress, especially across the Southern Ocean, the log registering 13£ knots for ■everal days. The inquiry into the loss of the Naronic vras held in Liverpool last month, but it failed to elicit anything which could account for the disaster. It appears that her cost was £112.685, and she was uninsured. The builders had carte blanche to produce their best work, and the Board of Trade Surveyors declare that they had never seen a betterconstructed vessel. Many believed the steamer capsized, while not a few hold to the i theory that she met with disaster by colliding with one of the dereliots floating about in the Atlantic, several of which were

reported in the usual track of vessels between Liverpool and New York about the time of the Naronic's disappearance.
