The feeling in England, as expressed in the press, is decidedly averse to France being permitted ti free hand in Siam, and the Government is being appealed to to take steps to prevent the French from proclaiming a protectorate over the country. They are acting in a very arrogant manner towards the Siamese, in the hope, it is suspected, of driving them into some hostile act which they could seize upon as an excuse for practically annexing Siam. The rumours mentioned in letters received in Sydney from the New Hebrides regarding the efforts being made to induce the French to annex the islands have been brought under the notice of the House of Commons, and the Government is to be questioned respecting the matter. According to the London Daily News the Governmerit has no information of any intention on the part of Franco to interfere with the group. A terrible cyclone has boon experienced in America, causing great loss of life and property. Cholera riots have broken out in Galicia, the ignorant peasantry boliering that the doctors are responsible for the epidemic. The disease lias made its appearance in Holland.
