POLICEMEN AT LOGGERHEADS.
ASSAULT IN A GUARDROOM. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Tuosday. To-day Constable McCarthy charged exConstable Crawley with assault. Ab tho time tho offence was committed both men were in the police force, and it appears that the complainant had opened a letter of the defendant's in mistake. On July 22, when both men wore in the watchhouse, the defendant referred to the matter and used threatening language, subsequently assaulting the complainant., the latter stating he was knocked down and kicked, and was laid up for a week. In defence Crawley said the complainant attempted to striUo him with a poker, and he only acted in selfdefence. Tho magistrate fined Crawley 10s and costs. Since the offence Crawley was asked to resign, and lately petitioned Parliament for an inquiry into the reason of his dismissal.
