A PERILOUS PASSAGE. THE LOCH RANNOCH SURROUNDED BY ICEBERGS. The ship Loch Rannoch, which left Melbourne on January 1, laden with wool and a geuentl cargo, had a trying time after rounding Cape Horn, when 47 days out, owing to encountering numerous floating icebergs of creak size. _ At sunset on the evening of February 15 there was nothing in sight from the masthead, but shortly after midniidit the chief officer, who was in charge, observed what appeared to be a squall ahead. The helm was ordered hard a-port, and the captain was summoned, and a few seconds after that officer came on deck an immense iceberg was observed looming through the clouds and hare, by which it had beei: obscured. All hands had been piped and the ship paid rapidly off under the poi t helm, and when in a line fore m.d alt with the iceberg, the head yards caught the ice, then the main yard, and lastly I he mi/en topgallant yard, showers of icv falling on deck as a result of the collision. The captain feared that the ship was hulled, and ordered the pumps to be got ready, and the boats to be cleared away and provisioned, but as the carpenter reported no extra water in the well, it was concluded that the hull hail suffered W no serious extent. From observations made after clearing the iceberg and getting it between him and the clear western sky, the captain gives it as his opinion that it was between 400 feet and 500 feet high anil about a mile in length. The damage sustained by the vessel was not as great as might have been expected, though much inconvenience was caused. The port foreyardarm was broken in two, and the truss carried away. The starboard futtock shrouds and the crane of the lower topsail-yard also carried away, and the port-yard-arm was split, whilst there was a good few minor injuries. The position of the iceberg which struck the ship was 51T0 S. and 49"J0 W. At sunset on February 16, the vessel was 1 completely surrounded with ice, many of the masses being of an enormous size, and a good deal of difficulty was experienced, owing to the disabled state of the ship in clearing them. At daybreak on the 17th, she was still rounded, some of the icebergs being between 3DO feet and 590 feet in height, tl.it - topped, and sheer Upright. The whole of that day and night, the greatest cue was necessary to avoid a collision, and when day broke ou the morning of ill" Ist h there seemed to be no change from the moving fields of ice. At 7a.m., however, an oie'iiiug was discover' '~ and the captain decided to steer for it. The vessel passed through miles of floating ice and icebergs, some of which were breaking up, and others getting top heavy and turning over. The larger bergs were soon left astern, and by sunset the last one hail disappeared from sight. The distance traversed through the ice was in all about 200 miles. The vessel then continued her course, and reached London in loy days, which, under the circumstances, was a fairly good passage.
